![]() ![]() It also, among many other things, reworks ranged combat and necromancy, allowing the rise of new viable player builds. This update adds a new challenging player species who is masterful in practically every skill, but is also constantly chased by dark forces, giving them a very limited number of turns to beat the game. ![]() It's also quite ugly compared to most modern games, but their new pixel artist is working on improving that! Some places have charm, though, such as this Shoals dungeon, guarding the Barnacled Rune of Zot. The tactics and strategies it asks the player to understand can range from the most simple melee build where your character only knows how to put axes in other dudes' faces, and how to avoid axes of said dudes going into your face - to the most galaxy brained caster remapping the whole number row with spell macros, flooding the screen with undead allies and storms of fire until they are inevitably the victim of their ever-inflating ego. The winrate of any given run is always wavering between 1 and 2%, but tryhards can streak dozens of wins. Most players never beat the game, and DCSS (the game, not the community!) is quite unfriendly towards new players, aside from an acceptable tutorial. After it is seized, and your character has ascended back level-by-level towards the place where their entire jouney began, victory can finally be claimed. After 3 runes have been collected, the gate to the Realm of Zot can then be opened, where the Orb of Zot is found at the end of the (extremely hardcore) final floor. Dungeons include the quiet and dastardly Slime Pits, which has a tendency to transform its challengers with debilitating mutations, or the truly insane chaos of the Ziggurat and its 27 floors filled with armies of elite monsters. It is completely free, has zero monetization or advertisements, is open source and playable directly in browser.Īfter choosing a class and a species (some of which include literal sapient octopi and housecats), the goal of DCSS is to gather at least 3 out of the 15 Runes of Zot scattered across the game, each located in its own themed randomly generated dungeon. For those who are not aware, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, or DCSS for short, is a relatively ancient game (derivative of a 1997 traditional roguelike, and released in version 0.1 in 2006!) that still somehow gets updated every year with massive content releases.
